well, what do you know...

I read today about square watermelons. I always thought that it was made up, kind of like an urban legend among foreigners as to how picky Japanese people could be. But I found this article today and, what do you know, it's true. They're pretty expensive and don't taste as good as regular watermelons so I'm at a loss as to why they are even made in the first place but there you go. Square watermelons. Another oddity of Japanese culture.

Odd indeed! And totally useless but quite funny :)

I saw a news item on tv here in Japan about farmers producing heart-shaped and star-shaped cucumbers. What do you think it is this urge to control vegetation? (ie- Bonzai, unnaturally-shaped fruits and vegetables, Japanese gardens- our landlord just shaved a tree in our garden!...)

i think these things are pretty darn cool looking. I think it may have more to do with the presentation that the taste. If your having a party or catering then it is much cooler to have a square watermelon on display rather than a regular one. It's more for the eye than the mouth!
Love Kim!
